Q1 Have you any tips for first-timers?
- Always read the rules carefully, and again before you post
your entry. Always abide by the rules.
- Send your entries in plenty of time. If there is then
a problem with your entry there is time to sort it.
- Send the correct fee. Make sure cheque or postal order
is made out to 'Bridport Prize', cheque is signed and dated, and
that amount is filled in correctly.
- If you want to know if your postal entry has arrived
enclose a stamped addressed postcard or a sealed envelope marked
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT. It is almost impossible to find your entry
to check if it has arrived if you do not do this. In June we
receive a lot of entries and you may not receive your
acknowledgement immediately. Another good reason to enter
early.
- If you send your entry via website then you will know if
your entry has arrived alright when you receive an e-mail from
World Pay which is your receipt for the entry fee. If we find
a problem when we print your entry we always e-mail you.
- If you want to know the results enclose a stamped
addressed envelope marked RESULTS with your postal entry.
Alternatively look at the website about the end of October when
results will be posted there.
- Never ask to alter your work, after you have sent it.
This causes enormous problems and anyway it is against our
rules.
- Always present your work in the best possible way. We
accept handwritten entries by post but make sure that they are
easy to read. Put the title on each page with the page
number.
- Do not put your entry in a folder. We remove all
entries from folders or covers before sending to the judges.
- Do not put your name and address on the entry. If
sending by post don't forget to include the completed entry form.
It is best to attach it with a paper clip - do not staple. The
entry form can be from our leaflet, photocopied or printed from
the web site.
- Keep a record of your entry. Also do not send your
only copy , keep a photocopy as entries cannot be returned.
- Make sure that you have revised your entry several times
before sending. Andrew Motion , the poetry judge in 2005
commented :- The poems received over the internet seemed (even)
less revised than the ones sent by post. Is there something about
the immediacy of the internet which actually encourages a lack of
'work'? This must also apply to short stories.
